The Advanced Engineering extension to the SoftLogix PLC allows PLC programmers to read and write digital bits to the class of ISA and PCI digital I/O cards that use the 82C55 chip. This includes various cards from such brand names as National Instruments, Inc., Industrial Computer Source, Inc., and ComputerBoards, Inc.

Once the board is configured, reads and writes are performed every program scan. To reconfigure the board the rung must perform a False-to-True transition.
