While off the shelf products claim to reduce support costs and improve ROI, the truth is that they are frequently replaced because they are difficult to customize and enhance and their proprietary technology routinely becomes outdated. In the end, the off the shelf product rarely meets every need, and the “savings” quickly disappear with unforeseen implementation, support, upgrade, and maintenance costs.
