Main Features
Warden is a
monitoring and response utility that allows Information Systems personnel to
monitor the status of any process or service on any Windows NT workstation or
server on the network. What sets Warden apart, however, is its ability to
respond automatically to the loss of any key process or service. When a process
being monitored by Warden fails, it can restart the service, reboot the machine,
or notify you by pager. Warden acts as your eyes and ears, and your first line
of defense, in ensuring the stability of your information systems. Warden is a
fully configurable utility. It allows you to setup the frequency of monitoring
of any process or service and also to configure the sequence of events if
something goes wrong.
Monitoring
Warden allows
you to monitor processes and service both on the local machine and on any
Windows NT Workstation or Server in your network. Based on a time interval you
specify, Warden will periodically poll the processes and services you wish to
monitor. For any process that is not running when Warden polls it, Warden will
begin to take corrective action(s).
Corrective Action
This
feature of Warden allows you to specify what corrective action should be taken
when a monitored process or service is determined by Warden not to be running.
You can set up to three levels of corrective action. If Warden determines that a
process or service is not running, it will take the first corrective action. At
the next monitoring interval, when Warden checks the process or service again,
if it is still not running, Warden will take the second corrective action. If,
after the second corrective action, Warden determines that the process or
service is still not running, it will take the third corrective action. For
services, you can choose between Restart, Reboot, or Notify for corrective
actions. For processes, you can choose Reboot or Notify.
Paging
When a corrective
action of Notify is specified, Warden can send a numeric page with a numeric
message. This can be set up for each individual process or service that Warden
monitors.
Activating/Deactivating Monitoring
For each process and service that Warden is set to monitor,
you can activate or deactivate monitoring. This allows you to
"turn off"
monitoring for any process or service without losing the monitoring settings for
that process or service.
